Pet Dental Health Month – Learn about your pet’s dental health
At Agria Petinsure, we care for your pets and this Pet Dental Health Month, we want to remind you that the dental health of your pet needs attention.

Dental disease is extremely common in dogs and cats especially in older pets. It is vital that your pet attends their vet at least once a year for a full clinical examination where your vet will check your pet’s teeth.
Signs of Dental diseases
- Tartar on teeth
- Inflammation of the gums
- Bad breath
If your pet has severe dental disease, you may notice the following:
- Decreased appetite
- Difficulty eating/Favouring to eat on one side of mouth
- Pawing/rubbing at face
- Drooling/ Blood or discharge coming from mouth
- Loose teeth
- Reduced grooming in cats
- Swelling on the face below the eye/on the jaw
- Change in behaviour
If you think that your pet is suffering from the above symptoms, please take your pet to the vet as soon as possible, as your pet may be in considerable amount of pain.
Brushing your pet’s teeth
You can help reduce the risk of dental disease by brushing your pet’s teeth. Ideally you should start brushing your pet’s teeth from when they are young, but older pets can become accustomed to having their teeth brushed also. You should brush your pet’s teeth 3 to 4 times a week at least, though best practice would be daily brushing.
Introduce dental chew treats and toys
Dental chews/treats can also help reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar, though some can be quite calorific, so care is needed that your pet does not gain weight. There are special prescription dry pet foods that are designed to help prevent dental disease also. Chew toys can also help keep your dog’s teeth clean.
Agria Petinsure does not cover dental conditions unless caused by an accident*
